Filed Cargo Claims and Pictures of Damage

As guidance on the YRC Freight claims process, we strongly encourage including pictures of the damage in all filed claims. Pictures provide claims analysts the information needed to determine the extent of damages. While submitting a photo may create an extra step, it will ultimately allow for faster and more reliable processing.

The Benefits

SPEED – Pictures reduce potential questions from examiners, which allows for faster processing of your claim.

PREVENTION – Pictures help document the packaging and exterior carton damage, which in turn helps Operations determine what may have caused the damage and how to prevent it from occurring again. This information also helps customer service when working to resolve potential issues.

DOCUMENTATION – Pictures help document the extent of damage, and validate deductions made to final invoices. This can be especially helpful if a shipper needs to file the claim based on their terms and a consignee has the merchandise in question, or for a third party who would not have possession of the merchandise and a claim is filed against them.

How Pictures Are Submitted

About 35% of claims are already submitted with pictures. Currently, pictures of damaged items are:

  • Submitted in the original file by the claimant
  • Requested by the Claims Examiner
  • In Inspection reports performed by an outside agency
  • Taken by our driver at the time of delivery

Important Information

To expedite processing, Third Party Claimants not in possession of the shipment should secure a picture before filing a claim. Claimants are required to hold all merchandise until a claim is paid and disposition is given. It is very important to follow this practice, as claims may be declined and/or delayed otherwise.
